Three years ago, a movie called “Somm” changed the stuffy world of the sommelier forever, creating a new sense of awareness in the general populace. It revealed a competitive battlefield where egos, brains and competing tastes clashed as four men struggled to pass one of the world’s toughest tests, the Master Sommelier exam.
“Somm: Into the Bottle” takes an even deeper dive into the somm’s cultish world, exploring how wine is made. With a few familiar faces from “Somm” as our guides, we meet some of the wine world’s giants and go to several holy places, including the dusty cellars of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.
We find out how a wine ages, what happens in a cellar and other mysteries. And we look at how wine was affected by major events such as Prohibition, two world wars and the Napa earthquake.
